Ibn Al-Haytham

Ibn Haytham was born in Basra in Iran. During the Islamic Golden Age, Basra was a key beginning of learning and he was educated there and in Baghdad he focused on the high point of Islamic civilization. During his time in Iran, he worked as a civil servant and read many theological and scientific books. One account of his career has him called to Egypt by Al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah to regulate the flooding of the Nile, a task requiring an early attempt at building a dam at the present site of the Aswan Dam. He was kept under house arrest from 1011 until al-Hakim’s death in 1021.During this time; he wrote his l Book of Optics. After his house arrest ended, he wrote scores of other treatises on physics, astronomy and mathematics. He later traveled to Islamic Spain. Ibn al-Haytham’s writings are too extensive for us to be able to cover even a reasonable amount in our modern world. He seems to have written around 92 works over 55 have survived. The main topics on which he wrote were optics, including a theory of light and a theory of vision, astronomy, and mathematics, including geometry and number theory.in his book he makes it clear that his investigation of light will be based on experimental evidence rather than on intellectual theory. He notes that light is the same irrespective of the source and gives the examples of sunlight, light from a fire, or light reflected from a mirror which is all of the same nature. He gives the first correct explanation of vision, showing that light is reflected from an object into the eye.
