Alkhwarizmi Alkhwarizmi was a Persian mathematician, astronomer and geographer during the Abbasid Empire, a scholar in the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. He was born in a Persian family, and his birthplace is given as Chorasmia by Ibn al-NadimFew. His name may indicate that he came from Khwarezm (Khiva), then in Greater Khorasan, which occupied the eastern part of the Greater IranAlkhwarizmi, a Muslim mathematician and astronomer whose major works introduced Hindu-Arabic numerals and the concepts of algebra into European mathematics. Latinized versions of his name and of his most famous book title live on in the terms algorithm and algebra. In the twelfth century, Latin translations of his work on the Indian numerals introduced the decimal positional number system to the Western world. Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi was a member of the house of Wisdom in Baghdad where he contributed most of his findings and research. The house of wisdom was merely a center where research into scientific issues was done. It also conducted some teaching activities there. Interestingly, this man has also been linked to the success of modern day algebra. He based most of his works on findings that had been written by scientists and mathematicians who lived before him. But the constant studies and discoveries in mathematics have been used as the foundation for many scientific discoveries. Alkhwarizmi contributions to mathematics, geography, astronomy, and cartography established the basis for innovation in algebra and trigonometry. His systematic approach to solving linear and quadratic equations led to algebra, a word derived from the title of his 830 book on the subject, “The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing” In an attempt to take his mathematical skills further, Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi also made some calculations about the position of the moon. As if that was not enough, his calculations even went as far as including the position of the sun and planets.
